I love the simplicity of this idea. Staying and struggling with texts is a key nowadays.
This reminds me of a guided-reading protocol I used to do with students in science class. They would have time (5-10 minutes) to read the informative text, flip it over, and then contribute all the big ideas and details of the text to an A3 sheet of paper in the middle of the group (3-4 students). Different coloured pens helps make sure everyone contributes. Then they would be given another 5-10 minutes to read the text again, but they could not write on the paper in the middle. Then they would flip over the reading again and add ideas to the middle. They really tried to remember words and phrases from the text, and when they couldn't, they would reread with purpose. At the end, they would condense the main ideas of the text in one sentence.
I know the purpose and ideas are different, but I wonder if even one round of not looking at the text would spark conversation and then have people running back to the book, hungry for more ideas.
Love that you made the recalling of the big ideas and concepts a social activity. Seems like a great way to "retrieve" the information to use one of the big words these days. Also the going back to the text a second time - then coming up with one sentence to synthesize the ideas. Great way to approach text and especially that you were doing this with a science text! Thanks for such a thoughtful comment and great idea!

Thanks, as always, for the inspiration!
